I am staring at !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! very hard, thinking about driving it across the country, getting a new set of baja fenders painted to match, and begin a new Baja life.

That’s half my feeling, but having bought a heap of rust for $1500, I am neatly in the camp of ‘buy the nicest version of a car you can afford.’

All the other VWs in worse shape seem to have rust, or are just as expensive as this one.

I was thinking of keeping suspension stock height, but going with the Baja kit, wheels, and tires. And front discs. And try to get the stock engine to something like my current-spec lumpy loud engine.

I emailed the seller for pics of the underside. It may be cheap for a restored car because it’s not actually as clean underneath as the seller thinks.

You must go get it. A road trip across the country in an old Beetle is the perfect idea. Write some stories and the whole trip is a work expense. You do need to leave this one un-baja’d.

Yeah, it’s super clean, but it’s a Beetle. They made tons of the things, so I don’t really see the problem with making one better.

I feel you. I live in the salt covered midwest. I have regular fantasies of buying a one way ticket to the west coast and driving back some rust free example. Your post about the midget today sent me on a cl hunt again today.

It’s not too nice to turn into a baja, it’s not perfect or a rare edition or anything. VW made a lot of beetles... I say go for it!

Yes, start with something un-rusty. It makes everything terrible. Besides, it’s not exactly like you’d be chopping up some uber-rare 1 of 1. It’s a Beetle, they made millions of ‘em.

My gut reaction is that it’s too nice to Baja, but they made so many Beetles that i don;t know if there is such a thing as too nice to Baja. It’s not like it can’t go back to stock if it really needed too.
